Nintendo have attempted to prevent the use of mod chips by coating their latest Wii DVD drive chips with a layer of hard black epoxy resin, this has previously been attempted unsuccessfully by Microsoft in their Xbox 360's, the resin can be removed, but requires special tools/chemicals.
